Add the veg.
Get the sauce.

Prep is a countertop machine that chops, mixes and blends raw vegetables into sauces, salsas and dips. You do the cooking.

In development. Not on sale yet.

The problem

Chopping is the part nobody likes

Ask people which kitchen job they like least, and the top three are all prep.

Chopping onions32%
Peeling root veg22%
Peeling garlic19%

Survey of 2,054 UK adults, Censuswide for Ocado, Feb 2022.

Most of us don't mind cooking. We mind the chopping that comes before it.

How it works

Three steps. No knife.

  1. Add the veg

Put in your vegetables, herbs and nuts. Peel onions and garlic first.

  2. Choose a texture

Coarse for salsa, smooth for pesto, or anything in between.

  3. Press start

Prep chops, mixes and blends. You get a bowl that's ready to cook with.

Time per recipe: [[to be measured on the prototype]]

What it makes

Sauces, salsas, pestos and dips

Make one for tonight, or a few for the week. Then cook the rest your way.

  • Salsa
  • Pesto
  • Romesco
  • Chimichurri
  • Curry paste
  • Dressings
  • Soup and stew bases

Texture

Chunky when you want it. Smooth when you don't.

Food processors are quick, but they often turn onions into pulp. Prep is designed to stop at the size you pick. Your salsa looks hand-chopped, and your pesto comes out smooth.

Cleaning and safety

Easy to clean. Safe by design.

These are our design goals for the first version. We'll show them working on video before we ask anyone to pay.

One bowl Planned

Not a drawer full of parts. The bowl goes in the dishwasher.

Quick rinse Planned

A short rinse cycle between recipes, so you can go from salsa to pesto.

Blades out of reach Planned

The blades stay inside a closed bowl. Open the lid and they stop.

Quiet mode Planned

A gentle chime you can turn down, so it won't take over the kitchen.

Size, bowl volume and noise level: [[specs TBC]]

No lock-in

It keeps working, even offline

Lots of smart gadgets have stopped working when their company's servers switched off. We don't want that for Prep.

Works without Wi-Fi Planned

The basics work without the internet or an account.

No pods

No capsules or special packs. Use whatever vegetables you like.

Chopping is never a subscription

Any app extras will be optional. The core job stays free.

Honest about what it does

Prep does the prep. It doesn't cook, and the first version doesn't peel.

Comparison

Why not just use a food processor?

You can. Here's how Prep is meant to be different.

Progress

Where we are today

Prep is a prototype, not a finished product. The drawing at the top of this page is a concept.

When we film the real thing, we'll show it in one continuous take, at normal speed, with real food.
